Moreton Christmas Lights – Open Letter to Moreton Traders

Dear Retailer

As you are aware, every year at this time Christmas lights are installed on the lighting columns in our Towns shopping area in order to bring festive cheer. Many people including some of the traders believe that the funding for this is provided by the Council; unfortunately this is not the case.

Two residents of Moreton, Angela and Steve Pouncey run the Moreton Christmas Lights Association (MCLA), which is a properly constituted organisation. Throughout the year Angela and Steve raise money through various activities, supported by your local councillors, Chris Blakeley, Steve Williams and me, and all of this work is done on a voluntary basis by MCLA to ensure our Town is lit up for Christmas to attract more shoppers to the retail outlets in Moreton.

We offer support and guidance to Angela & Steve in their bids for grants and funding that may be available from various organisations and we have been fortunate to receive a small amount of funding this year from ‘Your Wirral’ a joint funding pot operated by the Council and Magenta Living.

However the cost involved in this project is considerable when you factor in cost of purchasing new lights, repairing damaged lights and storage. The cost of installing and uninstalling lights is around £50 per lighting column, which has to be carried out by a qualified electrician authorised by the Council.

The Christmas lights will be erected in the next couple of weeks and the switch on is taking place on Saturday November 21st outside of the Coach and Horses pub from 3.30pm with a buffet raffle and entertainment in the pub, with the switch on at 5.00pm.

Through this letter we are asking retailers in Moreton for a small donation, either financial or of party food towards the buffet and perhaps a raffle prize. All donations will be very much appreciated and acknowledged on local councillor’s websites, social media and in their leaflets.

I sincerely hope you are able to help and support our Towns Christmas Lights this year and in years to come. If you can help then please contact Angela and Steve on: 07545 072760. Alternatively contact me using the details on this letter.

With my best wishes
Bruce Berry
Councillor for Moreton and Saughall Massie
