As a Merseytravel representative, I have spent the best part of today with a delegation from the Republic of Bulgaria who are visting Wirral/Merseyside on a fact-finding visit. The group were welcomed by the Mayor Of Wirral, Cllr Andrew Hodson at Spaceport. All of the group are officials from town halls across Bulgaria, and they were in Wirral to see how the borough had invested its European Union ‘Objective One’ funding over the years.
Bulgaria joined the European Union in 2007, and is the poorest of all the EU states, as such it is now benefitting from the highest level of EU support (formerly known as Objective One) to strengthen its economy. During the day we visited a number of key EU-funded projects in the area including Merseytravels Spaceport at Seacombe, the Floral Pavilion in New Brighton, and Merseytravels U534 attraction at Woodside Ferry Terminal, as well as other sites in Birkenhead and Port Sunlight. The group also looked at plans for the £4.5 billion Wirral Waters project during a visit to the dockland site. I thoroughly enjoyed the day, and I hope that in a small way we have sparked the delegation, so that when they return home they can all work together to deliver some tremdous schemes.
