At lunchtime today I attended the official opening of Mersey Ferries, Terminal at the Pier Head. The opening paid tribute to John Newton, a former slave trader who witnessed the horrors of the trade and who in 1748 had ‘A spritual conversion’ and some time later helped Wilberforce to stop this horrendous human trafficking.
